Kolín

Charming Historic Town — Gothic Cathedral & Medieval Streets

~30 minutes from Velenice by car

About Kolín

Kolín is a charming historic town in Central Bohemia that's often overlooked by tourists favoring nearby Kutná Hora. This works to the advantage of visitors seeking authentic Czech town atmosphere without crowds. With pastel houses, winding cobblestone streets, and centuries of well-preserved history, Kolín offers a delightful glimpse into traditional Bohemian life.

Just 30 minutes from Velenice Cottage, Kolín makes an excellent half-day trip. The town is dominated by the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, designed by renowned architect Petr Parléř (who also worked on Prague's St. Vitus Cathedral). Beyond the cathedral, Kolín features a picturesque historic center, an ornate baroque ossuary, and one of the Czech Republic's most important Jewish heritage sites.

Top Attractions

⛪ St. Bartholomew Cathedral

The town's most highly-valued landmark, designed by Petr Parléř. Founded mid-13th century, this Gothic masterpiece features a baroque ossuary with ornamental decoration rivaling Sedlec's. The bell tower offers panoramic town views.

🏛️ Cathedral Hill Complex

🏙️ Historic Center

Picturesque Karlovo Square with City Hall, surviving Práchovna bastion walls, and charming pastel buildings. The peaceful riverside setting adds to the town's authentic character.

✡️ Jewish Quarter

Major preserved section of the historic Jewish ghetto. The Renaissance synagogue (late 14th-early 15th century) features priceless interior. Old Jewish Cemetery is the second most important in Czech Republic with over 2,500 tombstones.

💀 Baroque Ossuary

Decorated with motifs of mortality, the ossuary's ornamental richness is comparable only to Sedlec near Kutná Hora. A unique example of baroque memento mori art.
